چکیده

A method is introduced for diagnosing a transilient matrix for moist convection. This transilient matrix quantifies the nonlocal transport of air by convective eddies: for every height z, it gives the distribution of starting heights z9 for the eddies that arrive at z. In a cloud-resolving simulation of deep convection, the transilient matrix shows that two-thirds of the subcloud air convecting into the free troposphere originates from within 100 m of the surface. This finding clarifies which initial height to use when calculating convective available potential energy from soundings of the tropical troposphere.

Nonlocal transport of passive scalars in turbulent penetrative convection

We present a Green's function approach for quantifying the transport of a passive scalar (tracer) field in three-dimensional simulations of turbulent convection. Nonlocal, nondiffusive behavior is described by a transilient matrix (the discretized Green's function), whose elements contain the fractional tracer concentrations moving from one subvolume to another as a function of time. The approa...

Non-Local Transport in Turbulent MHD Convection

The nonlocal, non-diiusive transport of passive scalars in turbulent MHD convection is investigated using tran-silient matrices, which describe the "probability" that a tracer particle beginning at one position in a ow will be advected to another position after some time. We present a new method for calculating these matrices from simulation data which involves following the trajectories of pas...

Penetrative convection in stratified fluids: velocity and temperature measurements

The flux through the interface between a mixing layer and a stable layer plays a fundamental role in characterizing and forecasting the quality of water in stratified lakes and in the oceans, and the quality of air in the atmosphere. The evolution of the mixing layer in a stably stratified fluid body is simulated in the laboratory when “Penetrative Convection” occurs. The laboratory model consi...

Buoyancy statistics in moist turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection

We study shallow moist Rayleigh–Bénard convection in the Boussinesq approximation in three-dimensional direct numerical simulations. The thermodynamics of phase changes is approximated by a piecewise linear equation of state close to the phase boundary. The impact of phase changes on the turbulent fluctuations and the transfer of buoyancy through the layer is discussed as a function of the Rayl...

Atmospheric Moist Convection

■ Abstract Various forms of atmospheric moist convection are reviewed through a consideration of three prevalent regimes: stratocumulus; trade-wind; and deep, precipitating, maritime convection. These regimes are chosen because they are structural components of the general circulation of the atmosphere and because they highlight distinguishing features of this polymorphous phenomenon. In partic...
